A few words on why we make mats, and what we hope they do for your table.
Before the Tiles
There is a particular kind of evening we keep designing for: the table cleared, the good chairs pulled in, someone pouring, someone shuffling, and no real agenda beyond being together for a few hours. Mahjong has always been an excuse for that evening as much as it is a game. We make the mats that dress the table for it — because the objects you gather around are part of what makes the gathering feel considered rather than incidental.
On Considered Design
Every pattern in the collection starts as a question about the room it will sit in — does it hold its own on a bare table, does it complicate or calm the tiles set down on top of it, does it look as good under morning light as it does under lamplight at ten at night. We would rather ship nineteen mats we believe in than a hundred we don't. That restraint is the whole design philosophy, really: fewer, better, considered things.
The Pleasure of a Well-Made Object
A mahjong mat is a small thing to invest care in, and that is exactly the point. The best objects in a home are rarely the loudest ones — they're the ones that quietly do their job well, gathering after gathering, until they become part of the memory of the evenings themselves. That is what we are trying to make: not just a surface for tiles, but a small, lasting piece of the ritual.
